Though it is a big-budget purchase -- I'm really glad I bought it. I have been doing 3 indoor rides per week whereas in the past I'd do 3 per winter!

This is a nice trainer. It is relatively quiet. At this price it ought to include free Rouvy, not just the free ride for one hour at a time. Also, it is not recommended to calibrate it on Zwift as that might totally foul up everything. Calibrate it on Rouvy. A smart trainer used online is much easier to use than a dumb trainer; you do not have to pay attention to keep your power at a desired level. Also it really is a lot more fun. I have always loved my trainer but this is so much easier to ride for an hour or more.

After less than a year of use, my Hammer is lunching itself. A grinding noise is emanating from the bowels of my trainer. Cycleops is aware and it's customer service has been lacking. I've been working on getting this problem resolved for more than a month. If you buy this trainer, know that you may have to either you might have to pay to ship it back to them ($60) to fix their DEFECT or they will send you out the part and you will have to dig into the guts of your trainer and fix it yourself. Don't make the same mistake I did and consider the alternatives.

            Comments:

I bought this for winter indoor training. This is my first trainer. The idea of training indoors on my bike seems boring and I have avoided this for years. I am three workouts in and set my trainer up to use Rouvy. The workout is more intense than outdoor riding. I found that climbing is slightly more difficult than real life. A 6% grade on the trainer is a bit more difficult that on the road (I would estimate 10% harder). Flats seem to have a similar feel and my speed is about what I would expect with no wind factored in. Where the workout is more intense is descending. I live in the Colorado Rockies, so climb and descend on every ride. My heart rate will often drop to around 100 on an actual descent and the only reason to pedal is to keep loose. On the trainer, it maintains some tension on the descent and so my heart rate stays elevated. My average heart rate on a longer ride might be 130 outdoors. Using similar climbs and descents on the Hammer, I have been averaging about 144.

The Hammer, combined with Smart training applications, has taken my off season bike training to the next level. Great, realistic feel with quick response to inclines increasing resistance. Time flies using the hammer with apps like Zwift, TrainerRoad, and Rouvy.

Paired with Zwift. Easy to set up though I recommend a bike shop to install the cassette and then tune the rear derailleur for optimal performance. Consistent trouble free experience. Easy management with firmware upgrades.
